The Canyon Division represents the competing routes of the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads connecting Oakland via Niles Canyon to the Central Valley and points east over the Altamont Pass. The WP route carried the famous California Zephyr passenger train to and from Chicago. The inaugural run was on March 20, 1949. San Francisco passengers took the 9:30 a.m. ferry to Oakland, boarding the Zephyr at the 3rd St.Depot. The last run terminated in Oakland on March 22, 1970.
